Dickens Ballet Treat Feast for the Eyes

Dickens Ballet Treat Feast for the Eyes - Sidmouth Review

Professional ballet retuned to Sidmouth this week as dancers from the touring Ballet Theatre UK gave a scintillating performance of A Christmas Carol this week, writes Di Bowerman.

The group is set to return to the town again next spring with Alice in Wonderland and although billed as suitable for young and old, I imagine next years offering will be less sinister then this Dickens’ tale, which may have made a few of the youngsters in the audience jump at the appearance of the ghostly Jacob Marley, his dead business partner, wrapped in chains of greed and want.

There was a true Dickensian feel to this production, which, after a sombre funeral scene, sprang to life with a Christmas gathering of London street shoppers, bustling to get last minuet gifts.
Three young dancers from Lynne Thorn’s East Devon Dance appeared briefly as the Cratchit children.
Luca Varone - Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come
Ballet Theatre UK - A Christmas Carol
With a dark grey set and black and brown costumes, Artistic Director Christopher Moore transported us back in time to the mid 19th century when Dickens wrote this book.

The role of miserly Ebenezer Scrooge was a testing one, and David Brewer made an excellent job of it.

His penny-pinching ways are brought home to him in a dream when he is visited by the ghosts of Christmas past, present and future, who make him understand the true meaning of Christmas.

The elegant Natalie Cawte was the ghost of Christmas past and used the stage to her best advantage. Her dancing was full of aplomb, graceful and a delight to watch.

So too was Helena Casado Cortes as Belle, Scrooge’s fiancĂ©, who came to him during a vision of past times, when he had been a happy man and in love, until Belle breaks off her engagement.

Another memorable performance was given by Luca Varone as the young Scrooge, and ghost of Christmas yet to come. His roles were testing, with many lifts, and little time to take a breath between scenes, yet he gave a riveting performance.

With just four male dancers in the company parts were shared about, and Joseph Mackie-Graves gave a sensitive performance as the downtrodden clerk Bob Cratchit, while Vincnt Cabot, who shares the role of Scrooge, was, in the Sidmouth production, the sinister ghost of Jacob Marley.

This production was a feast for the eyes from start to finish, combining traditional ballet with dramatic theatre and classical score, along with some stunning costumes.

Ballet Theatre UK will be returning to Sidmouth on the 25th and 26th of May 2013.

Fantastic Feed Back from Blackpool

Earlier this week Ballet Theatre UK performed their festive ballet 'A Christmas Carol' to happy audiences at The Blackpool Grand Theatre. Here is a review of the production from the Blackpool Gazette;

EVEN just mentioning the ‘C’ word before we’ve reached halfway through November is usually unheard of in our household.
But not this year, after seeing Ballet Theatre UK’s stunning production of A Christmas Carol.
Beautifully hand-crafted costumes and simple but effective stage sets brought Dickensian London to life in the Grand Theatre.
The audience, which almost filled the theatre, was taken on the well-known spiritual journey with old misery Ebenezer Scrooge as the three ghosts of Christmas past, present and future endeavored to make him see there is more to life than work.
Vincent Cabot played an evocative Scrooge with dramatic gestures making it easy to see his transformation from being a selfish penny-pincher to crumbling under the terror of the ghosts.
Sarah Mortimer - Shopping Solo
The choreography was perfectly timed to well-known festive tunes and hymns with some beautiful pointe work, splits in the air and pirouettes.
The dark, sinister moments in the production – especially during the performance from shadowy ghost of Christmas Yet to Come (Joseph Mackie Graves)– were contrasted with some light touches of humour.
Claire Corruble made an elegant Ghost of Christmas Past while Ghost of Christmas Present – Kazuka Oike – brought plenty of festive sparkle to the stage with her energetic routine to Deck the Halls.
There was lovely partnering between Young Scrooge (David Brewer) and his lost love, Belle (Sarah Mortimer), and the corps de ballet’s final routine when Scrooge found redemption was heart-warming.
This yuletide production really was the perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit early."

Congratulations to the whole company on a well deserved review.
The Company will next be performing at The Palace Theatre, Mansfield then off to the Theatre Royal at Bury St Edmunds for a five show run.

For all the latest...

The last few days have seen a flurry of activity for Ballet Theatre UK's Director, Dancers and Friends. Over three days, the International group of dancers have descended on Hinckley, to settle into new flats, seek out local amenities, and make an impression on the locals before the start of the new season tomorrow.

In the spirit of new beginnings, apart from moving to our new home in Hinckley, we also welcome three new dancers, Ines, Sarah and Joseph. Tomorrow sees the first day of rehearsals for our brand new production of 'A Christmas Carol,' and last night saw a British TV History 'First' - the first person to win £1.5 million on a TV gameshow, aided by our own Kazuka Oike's turning expertise, when she performed on itv's 'Red or Black.'

What a lot of news to report! And just to think, we haven't even begun the season yet! Follow company news here on the blog, as we report all the 'Firsts' that are coming up very soon!

Ballet Theatre UK in a nail-biting final of ITV's 'Red or Black?'

Ballet Theatre UK Company Dancers Kazuka Oike and Kesi Olley Dorey will appear on this Saturday's episode of Simon Cowell's hit TV show 'Red or Black.' The show is presented by Ant and Dec, and follows contestants through a number of rounds in which they must bet on one of two possible outcomes. In this case, they had to decide which ballerina could execute the most fouettés: Would it be home-grown Kesi Olley Dorey, or Japan's Kazuka Oike?

At stake was a momentous prize of £1.5 million and a life changing opportunity for one contestant, so there was no room for error. Our dancers lined up to spin, with Ronan Keating singing a live accompaniment, but accustomed to the pressure, they did us proud.

Tune in on Saturday 8th September at 7.25pm to see which one of our Dancing Queens was the victor, and whether the Berkshire Father-of-three went all the way...

Pointe Shoes. They have a tough life.

We buy them brand new and beautiful. Uniformly they sit in a box or bag, waiting for the necessary care and attention which will see them prepared and customised for their moment of glory on the stage. Patiently they journey with us up and down the country, enduring the sewing of ribbons and elastics. Bravely they endure being hacked and cut and shaved down with Stanley knives. They do not complain as they are bashed unceremoniously on concrete floors, or as they are stood on, bent, and beaten into the desired shape, for they know that their triumph is coming...

Their glory is short-lived. Perhaps for several special days they will be in favour; chosen for performances, even pas de deux, if they are lucky. They will help to hold balances, feel the excitement of doing multiple turns and enjoy the sound of rapturous applause. Dancers will pronounce: 'I love this pair!'

Yet before long, they will hear the fatal words: 'These shoes feel a bit soggy.' They will be removed, and replaced by a younger version of themselves. They might languish for weeks at the bottom of a dance bag, or immediately suffer the humiliating removal of their ribbons and elastics, that they might go on to serve another pair.

Yet even as they lie abandoned in a dressing room bin, they can look back to their finest hours and be glad that they have fulfilled their life's purpose. 'I was a Rose Adagio shoe, you know - Spring Tour 2012...wonderful times.'

St Mary's Church - Hinckley

A New Season, New Home, New Look...

Plans for our new production of 'A Christmas Carol' are well underway, with costume production in full swing, a fantastic score taking shape and visions of ghosts and spirits already whirling around the choreographer's mind and with this in mind we are proud to launch a new look for the company!
However, the Autumn season 2012 does not just herald the arrival of another great production from BTUK, but also an exciting new phase in the development of the Company.  We are pleased to announce that from the start of September, BTUK will be relocating to the Midlands, to a take up permanent residence in Hinckley, Leicestershire.

The move opens the way for a number of thrilling opportunities for the company, including a greater number of new and diverse productions per year, as well as collaborations with other Arts Organisations. Whilst remaining committed to our vision to tour all over the UK, bringing ballet to the widest possible audience, our new base will also be established with a view to creating a real hub for Dance and Theatre in the Midlands.

"This is a really great step for the company - our new home will provide a great place for creativity and the Central location will make touring a lot easier. The productions that we have coming up over the next year and a half are all different and unique, and we are all looking forward to getting started on them!"

- Christopher Moore - Artistic Director

Check Out Interview With Dancer Narissa Course with Richard Lofus, from The Wyvern Theatre...

Richard Loftus, Wyvern Theatre Marketing Manager, caught up with Ballet Theatre UK’s Narissa Course ahead of her performance in Sleeping Beauty this June.

You were born in Bristol, which is just down the road from Swindon – are you looking forward to coming back the South-West to perform?

It is always nice to be performing near my home and it also means friends and family have an opportunity to come and see me.

How long have you been dancing?

I have been dancing since the age of four and started full-time training at The Royal Ballet School at the age of eleven. I began my professional career in 2008 and joined Ballet Theatre UK in 2010.

You appeared in West Side Story, which happens to be our 2012 Summer Youth Project. What did you find most captivating about that story?

I have always loved the story of Romeo and Juliet which West Side Story is based on.  What particularly appeals to me is the contrast between the beautiful music for the Tony and Maria love story and the vibrant, sassy, Latin-American dancing and singing as seen in ‘America’.  It’s a wonderful musical to watch and perform.

With Ballet Theatre UK you have performed in Cinderella, The Nutcracker, The Snow Queen and will be touring again shortly with Sleeping Beauty. What do you enjoy most about performing with the company?

I enjoy performing with Ballet Theatre UK because its Director, Christopher Moore, is a very innovative choreographer whether he is re-creating the classics or his own original works such as The Snow Queen. His choreographic style has allowed me the freedom to develop as an artist. I also have had the opportunity of being able to perform various roles from principal to character parts which require much more acting ability and provides a wider variety to a dancer’s life.

What is most rigorous about your ballet training and rehearsals?

Classical ballet requires a great deal of stamina and strength. During rehearsals we are dancing all day and while on tour we have a class and rehearsals before each performance. Different dances demand varying amounts of strength depending on the choreography of the piece and ballet technique has to be sustained at all times even when you are tired. The life of a ballet dancer is very hard work and you have to love it and be incredibly dedicated to do it.

Will Sleeping Beauty make a good introduction to Ballet for those who have not seen it before?

Yes, it is a lovely fairy tale that everyone knows with beautiful and well-known music by Tchaikovsky. It is one of the great classical ballets and our Director Christopher Moore has created outstanding costumes and sets which would captivate any audience. It will definitely be a great way to introduce new audiences to the world of ballet.

BTUK Launches 'The Red Shoe Appeal'

As our Spring/Summer season draws to a close, we are excitedly looking forward to what is coming up next season, not to mention some well-deserved holidays! With plans for 'A Christmas Carol' already underway, and the diary for 2013 rapidly filling up, the future is looking bright for Ballet Theatre UK!

With so much coming up for the company, we are thrilled to announce the launch of our 'Red Shoe Appeal.' The cost of pointe shoes varies from £30 to £65 a pair, depending on the maker, and our female dancers get through them at an alarming speed! During a performance of 'The Sleeping Beauty,' our Auroras have been known to finish off a pair per act, and with such an intensive touring schedule, the annual bill for these essential tools of our trade is astronomical.

For this reason, we are hoping that our Friends and Followers will be able to help us, by making a donation to our Campaign. Any donation, small or large is enormously welcome, and will be hugely appreciated.

"Ballet Theatre UK has a lot of exciting plans for the future but as we aim to grow and develop as a company, with bigger productions and longer tours, the need for pointe shoes will always be a present and pressing need. We hope that our audience members can get behind this Appeal, and support us so we can carry on building on what we have started."
                                                                         - Christopher Moore, Artistic Director.
